Shop Ahoy is a non-profit, volunteer based weekly grocery shopping and delivery service for homebound seniors and disabled adults in Ventura County, California. Shop Ahoys purpose is to assist our clients to remain living independently in their homes by providing their necessary weekly groceries.
The history of Shop Ahoy
Aware that nationwide, a growing segment of the senior population prefers to stay at home as long as possible, Judy Madaj and David Berger developed the "Store to Door" model for providing groceries to homebound seniors and disabled adults in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1984. When they moved, they again initiated this service in Portland, Oregon. Shop Ahoy was launched by them in Ventura County in 1998.
How we work
1. We take your grocery order
On a scheduled day and time, a Shop Ahoy volunteer contacts each client to take their specific and detailed grocery order.
2. We shop and deliver weekly
Volunteers shop weekly at local Vons stores in Ventura County, using Vons Club prices when available, then deliver each order personally.
3. We provide flexible, personal support
Clients receive their register receipt at delivery. A donation is suggested to help cover operating costs, but no one is refused service if they cannot donate. Through weekly personal contact, volunteers build trust and friendship with clients.

Calling
Phoning clients weekly to record their specific order. Calling may be done on weekends or evenings to accommodate your schedule.
Shopping
Meeting at your local Vons on a specific day of the week to shop each order individually.
Delivering
Arriving at Vons to pick up the orders and deliver them to each client.
Contributions
Tax-exempt financial contributions are always appreciated.
